Michael Schumacher in the Ferrari F2001 started the race from third position. The livery of the F2001 was specially adapted in memory of the victims of the terrorist attack on 11 September 2001. Schumacher did not manage to play to his strengths in the race, which was characterised by constant lead changes, and in the end finished fourth.
